Aquamarine Jewelry: Our March Birthstone

aquamarine jewelryIntroducing Aquamarine Jewelry

If you haven’t already fallen in love with Aquamarine Jewelry, you will this month at JWO Jewelers – based in Roswell, Georgia.

Each and every month, we specialize in a new birthstone. This month, we are focusing on the beauty of the Aquamarine birthstone.

The gemstone is named for the Latin phrase “water of the sea.” It is usually blue, but can also be blue-green – depending on the stone you choose. The stone is a subsection of “beryl.” Beryl is responsible for other gemstones, including Emerald, Morganite, and Heliodor. These gems are separated by their hue and overall quality.

The most valuable aquamarine stones are harvested in Brazil. However, they can also be found in Nigeria, Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Russia, and Afghanistan.

Aquamarine was accepted as the modern March birthstone by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. It is suggested for both 16th and 19th wedding anniversaries and boasts a prized aqua blue color that you will rarely find using another stone.

Aquamarine Jewelry can be heated to high temperatures to enhance the clarity of the gem. However, this will result in a permanent color change. Often times, this is how jewelers accomplish a pure blue hue from a teal or blue-green stone.

For centuries, the aquamarine has been associated with courage, foresight, and happiness. It has been linked to youth and intelligence – in addition to healing. In the Middle Ages, people believed the stone could treat anxiety and reduce the danger of poisons.

Even seamen used Aquamarine Jewelry to keep themselves safe and to escape seasickness.

There are several versions of aquamarine, including Maxixe. This is the deep blue version of aquamarine and is incredibly popular today.

Believe it or not, aquamarine gemstones can be found in the United States. Some have been found in Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho. The largest gemstone ever mined was discovered in Brazil in 1910 – not long before the stone was made an official birthstone for the month of March.

This month, we will be specializing in quality Aquamarine Jewelry – including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, and more.
