June Birthdays Claim Two Birthstones – Pearl and Alexandrite!

Pearls have been wildly popular in jewelry for centuries because of their natural beauty. Alexandrite gemstones are extremely rare and desirable since they change color based on the lighting.

Alexandrite is said to strengthen intuition, heighten creativity and inspire the imagination.

The magic of this stone  is undeniable – especially if you love science. Alexandrite, the color-changing gem is a cool blue-mossy green when you look at it outside in bright daylight. Inside with lamp light, it’s a red gem with a warm raspberry undertone. You can watch it go back and forth by switching from fluorescent to incandescent light. The value of the Alexandrite increases as the color change becomes more distinct. It is truly amazing to see the changing colors in this beautiful gemstone. You may even feel some of the mysterious magic ascribed to the gem.

Alexandrite was discovered in Russia in 1831. Today, it can be found in Sri Lanka, East Africa, and Brazil – but the gem is exceptionally rare and therefore very valuable. JWO Jewelers does not stock synthetic Gemstones in their collection of gems.

There are many legends and myths about the healing powers of birthstones and their therapeutic influence. According to these legends, wearing a gemstone during its assigned month heightens its healing powers. For the full effect of the healing power, believers needed to own all twelve and alternate them monthly.

Published by the American Gem Society:

“Due to the rarity of Alexandrites, some jewelers stock synthetic versions of this enchanting gemstone. Synthetic gemstones are man-made alternatives to the natural material, possessing the same physical, optical, and chemical properties as the natural gemstone.”

AlexandriteThe Pearl is known for its calming properties. The Pearl is said to aid purity, charity, integrity, truth, and loyalty in its wearer.

For centuries, Pearls have been used as an adornment. Pearls were also one of the favorite gem materials of the Roman Empire. Later in Tudor England, the 1500’s were known as the Pearl Age.

Pearls are unique, as they are the only gems from living sea creatures, and require no faceting or polishing to reveal their natural beauty. In the early 1900’s, the first successful commercial culturing of round saltwater Pearls began. Since the 1920’s, Cultured Pearls have almost completely replaced Natural Pearls in the market.

JWO Jewelers specializes in Pearl Restringing and also keeps a few special pieces on hand. Ordering Pearls is always possible, and we are able to assist you in finding the perfect Birthday Gift for that special someone.

June’s birthstone, the Pearl, has long been a symbol of purity. The ancient Greeks believed that Pearls were the hardened tears of joy from Aphrodite, the goddess of love.
