What is a jewelry appraisal?

A jewelry appraisal is needed in order to have your fine jewelry insured. An appraisal is not a certification or gemological lab report. All of our appraisals are evaluated by a certified gemologist and have a complete description of the article including stone measurements, estimated weight, over all gram weight, as well as a picture of the item. Further reasons to have an appraisal is to be able to keep track of your jewelry, its value, as well as having a record of it when handing it down as an heirloom piece.

Jewelry appraisal is a process in which a professional examines a piece of jewelry and arrives at an estimate of its worth. Appraised prices usually consider the materials used, the style of the jewelry, the market for that type of jewelry, and the provenance of the jewelry.

Why do you need a jewelry appraisal?

Jewelry appraisalThe most important reason for a jewelry appraisal is for insurance purposes.   Throughout the years, metal, diamond and gemstone prices will fluctuate quite a bit. It is very important that you keep an up-to-date appraisal of all your pieces, so you will not experience a loss in the event of a theft, disappearance or damaged piece of jewelry. We recommend updating your appraisal(s) every 3-5 years to be certain you are fully insured according to the current market values should there be an incident. Few things are worse than having a beautiful piece of under insured jewelry that is lost and cannot be replaced due to an old under- valued appraisal. Most insurance companies require an appraisal for coverage. We are not an insurance company, and do not quote insurance pricing on jewelry. However, with that being said, the general cost of insuring your jewelry pieces is approximately ten dollars to twelve dollars per thousand per year. Most renters and homeowners policies cover things in your home, but only up to a certain dollar amount. More expensive items usually require a separate “rider” or an extension that will cover particular items against loss, theft, damage or mysterious disappearance.

What to expect when receiving a jewelry appraisal from JWO Jewelers

diamond jewelry appraisalIf you have 3 items or less you may wait for your appraisal(s), no need to leave them. Upon receiving your jewelry for appraisal, we will clean the piece(s) and inspect all prongs, channels, bezels, etc. We will determine the karat of the metals as well as the weight. All stones will be measured to determine approximate carat weight, examined for quality, color and clarity depending on the type of stone(s). This process of assessing your jewelry pieces will take approximately 20 minutes per piece. Much of this depends on how clean or not so clean your jewelry is. Again, we will clean your pieces of jewelry and please note that sometimes there are pieces that require more cleaning and soaking than others. Your appraisal will be assigned with a picture of the piece being appraised, this is a great bonus as you can easily glance at your appraisal and realize what piece matches up to what appraisal. Having been involved in insurance replacements for decades, we receive many appraisals in which the piece is not pictured on the appraisal. When multiple pieces are involved, this can be a daunting task of trying to play the match game so to speak. As the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words”. We will then determine replacement value according to the current market value. You get to leave with your jewelry and will receive the appraisal(s) in the mail within 2-4 business days.
